kulturkind was founded by Ulrike Nickel in 2008 as a cultural agency, with the aim of developing cultural education programmes for children and young people along with partners from the worlds of art, culture, education and research. In 2011 the agency was restructured as kulturkind – society for the promotion of art and culture for children and young adults. The organisation is a non-profit initiative.

kulturkind carries out numerous activities devoted to promoting reading and presenting cultural education for children and young adults. Cultural diversity in children’s books is one key theme of kulturkinds cultural education work. Its programmes present books that show heterogeneity and cooperation in society as a perfectly normal way of life. To do justice to the broad spectrum of cultural identities within society, the organisation often selects literature and illustrations in which all children can recognise themselves.

kulturkind is a non-profit initiative. It´s run by Ulrike Nickel, managing chairwoman, and Nina Wilkens, vice-chairwoman. The treasurer is Maria van Os.
